The Invention and Legacy of Povidone (PVP K)

Povidone (PVP K), invented by Prof. Dr. Walter Reppe in 1939, marked a significant milestone across multiple industries. Originally developed as a blood plasma substitute during World War II, PVP K grades continue to play a crucial role in the Life Science Industry, particularly in tablets, sprays, suspensions, and emulsions. Beyond healthcare, PVP K grades are widely utilized as film formers, wet binding agents, dispersants, and more by other Industries. Decades later PVPP (Polyvinylpolypyrrolidone), and PVP/VA (Vinylpyrrolidone/Vinyl Acetate Copolymer were born.

What is the Difference Between the Three Product Groups?

The manufacturing processes for PVP K Series (Polyvinylpyrrolidone), PVPP (Polyvinylpolypyrrolidone), and PVP/VA (Vinylpyrrolidone/Vinyl Acetate Copolymer) differ primarily in their polymerization techniques, crosslinking, and copolymerization steps. These variations in manufacturing lead to distinct properties and applications for each type of polymer, making them stable for a range of specialized uses.

Product Overview

Product Forms and Naming Conventions

PVP K (Polyvinylpyrrolidone) and PVP/VA (Vinylpyrrolidone and Vinyl Acetate Copolymer) are available in two primary forms:

  • Dry Powder: Denoted by 'P' in the product name (e.g., K30P refers to the powder form of PVP K30)
  • Liquid Solutions: Indicated by 'S' followed by the concentration percentage (e.g., K30 30%S represents a 30% solution of PVP K30)

PVP: The number following the 'K' (e.g., K30, K90) reflects the viscosity, with K30 indicating lower viscosity compared to K90.

PVP/VA: The numbers in the name (e.g., VA 64) represent the ratio of Vinylpyrrolidone to Vinyl Acetate in the copolymer, where VA 64 means 6 parts Vinylpyrrolidone to 4 parts Vinyl Acetate.

PVPP: Starclear PVPP is available in 3 grades, named F, XL and RXL. XL gives a hind on the coarser particle size, resulting in less surface area.
